When A Birthday Strikes

I don't know about you, but I've never been too fond of celebrating birthdays. When I was just a wee girl, the only thing of value I saw in a birthday celebration was the cake frosting. That's why most of my birthday pictures between the ages of 3 and 5 show me with my index finger in the cake. The last birthday I celebrated with a birthday party was my 18th, after which I swore never to have a birthday party ever again.

Don't take me wrong - I appreciate the life I was given. Still, I don't feel the day I first opened my eyes in this world is any different than others. Apart from the cake, that is. These past 15 plus years though, since I discovered I was allergic to wheat, birthday cakes have been rare and not very tasty either. So, what's a gal to do when a birthday strikes?

This month, I celebrated another birthday, and a rather significant one number wise. Let me rephrase that. I didn't actually celebrate. It was more like acknowledging another year has gone by. There would've been too many candles on that cake for a real celebration, so instead of putting the spotlight on myself, I decided to turn it around and put it on my customers. On January 16th, the B-day, I gave all my customers 16% off any one-of-a-kind pieces they purchased in my shop. Why one-of-a-kind? Well, it's because we're all one-of-a-kind people. There's never going to be another you or another me. Even if they let people get cloned, our clones will just look like us but will have their own personalities. So, one-of-a-kind people deserve one-of-a-kind jewelry, and there you have it!

Now, I'm thinking I should make this kind of celebration an annual tradition for all birthdays to come. What do you think? How do you like celebrating your birthday? Let me know in the comments below. Maybe I can borrow some of your ideas.
