5 Country Style Activities Everyone Should Try

Whether you're a country bumpkin or a city slicker, there are some good, old fashioned, country fun, summertime activities you should try at least once in your life. For all you know, you might decide to give up your computer games for one of these.

  1. Old fashioned hay ride. Yes, that includes a horse drawn wagon, a pile of hay, and a bumpy ride, but it's a lot of fun too. Just make sure you wear long pants, or you'll be saying, "ouch, ouch!" before the wagon has even moved. Dried grass can get pretty pokey.
  2. Playing horseshoes. You don't need a horse or a lot of land for this one. All it requires is some old, used horse shoes, a sand pit in the backyard, and good friends to play the game with. Don't know how to play? I bet there is a YouTube video for that.
  3. Inner tubing. Are you a bit more adventurous? Like to play in the water? Then, inner tubing is for you. Get a large inner tube that you can fit in, pick a clean river, lake, or swimming hole, and go at it! Just be smart not to do it near strong currents or waterfalls, and you'll be just fine.
  4. Line dancing. Not a dancer? Not a problem! Just watch what other folks around you are doing, listen to the caller, and keep the rhythm, and you'll be a line dancer before you know it. Where to find a line dance? Try a country wedding, hoedown, a guest ranch, a rodeo, or your local folk dancing group.
  5. Chuck wagon supper. Got hungry from all that physical activity? Get a good, old fashioned chuck wagon supper. However good of a cook you may be, you'll find meals cooked over open fire not only tasty but also different from anything you have had up to that point. Not to mention getting a lesson in an important part of life in the Old West.

Which of these activities are you going to try before the summer is over? Let me know in the comments below.

Want to try some of them in the heart of Montana, plus listen to some cowboy poetry and country music? Come enjoy Montana Cowboy Poetry Gathering with us in Lewistown mid-August.
